MS, DVM

Growing up in Corsicana and the rural parts of Navarro county, my animals provided an escape from the realities of life and always provided me the inner warmth and peace that allowed me to endure.  Unlike most of my colleagues, I didn’t always dream of being a veterinarian, I really thought that my career would be spent as a ranch hand.  After graduation from Corsicana High School, I moved to College Station and started volunteering at local veterinary practices.  This was the birth of my focus on a career in veterinary medicine.

I found mentorship back home in Corsicana at Carroll & Harper Veterinary Practice, with Dr. Ray and J.D. Carroll, and John Harper, all graduates of veterinary school in the 1950s. Of course, I didn’t take the usual route to veterinary school.  My high school sweetheart, Kristina, and I married just before graduating from Texas A&M, Class of ’97 and ‘98. We lived on the Presnal Ranch in Wixon Valley, and it was there that my mentor, Dr. Sonny Presnal, started directing my path.  With the advent of starting our family, I went to work for CSISD as an Agriculture Science teacher at A&M Consolidated High School.  After 2 years of this experience, I was accepted into veterinary school.

The 4 years of professional curriculum would bring challenges, but it was sweetened by our two oldest children, Jackson and Reagan.  It soon became obvious that we would make College Station our permanent home.  We joined Christ United Methodist Church in 2002, bought a home, and were active in the community.  After veterinary school, I went to train at a specialty hospital in Boise Idaho.  Upon returning, I went to work in Madisonville for a year, then Crockett, and soon after, started my own practice in College Station.  Soon after our third child, Carter was born it became obvious that we wanted to plant our roots deep in this community.  We searched for the right business property for years and, in 2015, we became the owners of the corner at Hwy 40 & Midtown Drive.  This was just the beginning of our journey.

Giovanna McCann

Giovanna McCann

DVM

Dr. Giovanna McCann never doubted she would become a veterinarian. She grew up in her mother’s clinic and watching her help animals in their time of need inspired her to pursue Veterinary Medicine. Giovanna spent three weeks at South 40 during her externship before making it her home and start of her career as a veterinarian. She has spent ample time in the small animal hospital in addition to practicing ambulatory work for South 40 Equine.

Dr. McCann believes that every animal deserves the right to the best care possible. This drives her to go above and beyond for her patients. The most important thing for her to accomplish before the end of a visit is to build a relationship with the pet and owner to ensure they feel understood and comfortable.

Dr. McCann has a dog, a cat, and three ponies. Finnegan, her island dog was adopted on St. Kitts during her studies at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Since then, he has traveled with her to several places including Barbados, and Puerto Rico.
